Trump Signs Funding Bill Ending Government Shutdown

U.S. President Donald Trump ended the partial government shutdown by signing the funding bill at the White House Oval Office on February 3, 2026. The bill, approved by the House of Representatives the same day, provides full funding to many federal agencies through the end of the fiscal year (September 30), while allocating only two weeks of temporary funding to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This arrangement buys time for ongoing negotiations due to debates and recent events surrounding DHS immigration practices.

US-Iran Tensions Escalate: Maritime Incidents

  • Serious military tensions arose in Gulf waters ahead of high-level nuclear talks between the US and Iran scheduled for Friday (February 6); these incidents heightened concerns of escalation and caused oil prices to rise by 2.3%.   • Iranian Speedboats Approach US-Flagged Tanker : Six Iranian speedboats approached a US-flagged oil tanker sailing in the Strait of Hormuz and ordered it via radio to shut down its engines and prepare to be seized. Massive Air Strike Ahead of Russia-Ukraine Talks

Brent crude futures rose 0.89% in the morning to $67.98 per barrel, approaching the $68 mark. Rakuten Securities analyst Satoru Yoshida noted that rising tensions in the Middle East are supporting prices, and that India’s agreement to limit Russian oil purchases and the Russia-Ukraine war are also having an impact. According to the analyst, WTI crude oil is expected to remain around $65 for a while longer.

Gold Prices Continue to Rise

Gold prices are maintaining their upward momentum after posting their strongest daily gain since 2008 in the previous session. South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act Issues First Penalty

The first case under South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act has concluded; a crypto exchange CEO received a 3-year prison sentence for price manipulation. The court also imposed a fine of 500 million won and ordered the forfeiture of 846 million won, but did not continue the defendant’s detention due to his cooperation. Between July and October 2024, the CEO had generated approximately 7.1 billion won in illegal profits by inflating volume and placing fake buy orders using automated trading programs.

Bitwise Acquires Staking Provider Chorus One

Goldman Sachs: Upward Risks for Gold Prices

Goldman Sachs maintains its $5,400/oz gold price forecast for December 2026 but notes significant upside risks. According to the bank, most of the price volatility in January stemmed from Western capital flows, with speculative movements remaining limited. In the silver market, London liquidity tightness amplified two-way fluctuations, while silver saw a sharper correction.
