Bitcoin Core is the primary open-source software that allows users to interact directly with the Bitcoin network. Originally launched by Satoshi Nakamoto as “Bitcoin,” it was later renamed to avoid confusion with the cryptocurrency itself.

By running Bitcoin Core, users operate a node on the network. This enables them to:

  • Verify the validity of blocks and transactions independently.

  • Maintain full control without relying on third-party servers or block explorers.

  • Enhance privacy and security when transacting in Bitcoin.

The software also includes a built-in wallet, allowing users to send, receive, and validate transactions. External wallets can also connect to a Bitcoin Core node for added transparency.

Running Bitcoin Core is particularly beneficial for frequent Bitcoin users. Unlike standard wallets that depend on external servers -potentially exposing your balances and IP address- Bitcoin Core provides a thrustless and decentralized way to manage funds.

As the reference implementation of Bitcoin, Bitcoin Core remains essential for the security, transparency, and decentralization of the entire network.
