ASIC-resistant
ASIC-resistant refers to a cryptocurrency’s ability to resist specialized mining hardware known as ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits). Unlike Bitcoin, which is dominated by ASIC mining, ASIC-resistant coins are designed so that ASICs offer little to no advantage compared to general-purpose hardware like GPUs. This ensures more decentralized mining participation, as individuals with standard equipment can compete fairly.
For example, cryptocurrencies such as Monero (XMR) and Ravencoin (RVN) adopt ASIC-resistant algorithms that are regularly updated to prevent ASIC dominance. However, maintaining ASIC resistance is an ongoing challenge, as manufacturers continuously develop new ASIC models capable of bypassing these defenses.
It is important to note that consensus mechanisms like Proof of Stake (PoS) or Delegated Proof of Stake (dPoS) are inherently ASIC-resistant, since they do not rely on computational mining power.
