Ask Price

● Beginner

In cryptocurrency and traditional financial markets, the Ask Price is the lowest price a seller is willing to accept for an asset. When a trader places a sell order on an exchange, the price they set becomes their “ask.”

Within an order book, both bid prices (buyers’ offers) and ask prices (sellers’ offers) are listed:

  • Bid Price: The highest price buyers are willing to pay.

  • Ask Price: The lowest price sellers are willing to accept.

The difference between the highest bid and the lowest ask is called the bid-ask spread. In highly liquid markets, this spread is usually very small, meaning trades can be executed quickly and efficiently.

Example: If Bitcoin’s highest bid is $49,950 and the lowest ask is $50,000, a buyer must pay $50,000 to acquire BTC at the current market rate. If a seller places a higher ask price, their order will only be filled once a buyer matches it.

Summary
The Ask Price represents the minimum price a seller is willing to accept. With limit orders, traders can define their own ask price, but with market orders, trades are executed instantly at the best available ask.
