Europe Supports Trump’s Ceasefire Proposal for the First Time; US and Russia Have Not Set a Date
European leaders issued a joint statement supporting the call for an “immediate ceasefire based on current front lines.” Signed by Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the UK, Finland, Denmark, and Norway, this statement marks Europe’s first open support for Trump’s peace plan. However, Washington and Moscow have announced that they have not yet set a date for the Trump-Putin meeting. Kremlin spokesman Peskov said preparations were “complex but ongoing,” while Trump stated that the meeting would be “a waste of time at this point.” Meanwhile, Ukraine is preparing a new peace plan for the summit to be held in London. This plan envisions the establishment of a “Peace Council” under Trump and the start of negotiations after the ceasefire.
Tension Ahead of US-China Talks: New Messages from Trump
Trump said that the planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping “may not happen,” but that he “expects to reach a good deal.” Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao and EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič discussed rare earth export controls and Nexperia Semiconductor. The parties agreed to meet face-to-face in Brussels in the coming days. German Foreign Minister Baerbock is also expected to visit China next week. Dutch Economy Minister Adriaansens has also made direct contact with China to find a solution to the Nexperia issue.
US Government Backtracks on H-1B Visa Fees
The Trump administration has narrowed the scope of the $100,000 fee rule for H-1B visas. This fee will now only apply to new applicants outside the US. Since approximately 54% of visas issued in 2024 are already held by individuals residing in the US, most applicants will be exempt from this fee. According to Bloomberg, Walmart has suspended its H-1B sponsorship; the company currently has 2,390 H-1B employees.
Japan’s New Prime Minister: Sanae Takaichi
LDP leader Sanae Takaichi has been elected Japan’s new prime minister, becoming the country’s first female prime minister. She is expected to revive the fiscal stimulus policies of the Abe era and pursue a more conservative line on immigration and defence policies. However, the new LDP–Innovation Party coalition still does not have a full majority in the lower house; this could expose the government to the risk of political instability in budget and reform processes.
Senator Elizabeth Warren Criticizes the GENIUS Stablecoin Act
Senator Elizabeth Warren called the GENIUS Stablecoin Act “underregulated” in a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Warren called for stricter enforcement rules in terms of financial stability and consumer protection. The bill proposes that stablecoins be backed by 100% US dollars or highly liquid assets, that annual audits be conducted for issuers above $50 billion, and that additional guidelines be introduced for foreign issuers. Warren also highlighted the conflict-of-interest risk in the Trump-linked World Liberty Financial USD stablecoin and called for operational risk measures, citing the example of Paxos’ $3 trillion PYUSD printing error.
Crypto Regulations Stalled in the US Senate
According to The Hill, bipartisan crypto regulation negotiations in the US Senate have stalled. The draft bill, leaked under the name “Decentralized Finance Regulation Draft,” has been heavily criticized by the crypto sector. Due to the government’s shutdown crisis, it is considered unlikely that the bill will pass before the end of 2025.
